Frequently Asked Questions

Gravel Driveway Repair & Maintenance FAQ

1. Why do I keep getting potholes in the same spots every year?

Potholes are usually a sign of trapped water. If a hole is simply filled with loose gravel, it will quickly reappear because the underlying structure is still compromised. We solve this by digging out the area to reach a solid base, reshaping it to allow drainage, and compacting layers of "crusher run" gravel to ensure the repair actually lasts.

2. My driveway has deep ruts and "washboards." Do I need to buy more gravel?

Not necessarily. Many driveways already have enough gravel; it has just been pushed aside or buried by years of traffic and rain. We often use specialized grading equipment to "scarify" or loosen the existing material, bring the good stone back to the surface, and regrade it to a smooth finish before deciding if a fresh top layer is truly needed.

3. How do you fix drainage issues so my driveway doesn't wash out during heavy Vermont rains?

The key to a long-lasting gravel surface in Vermont is a proper "crown"—making the center of the driveway slightly higher than the edges so water sheds to the sides rather than running down the wheel ruts. We also specialize in:

  • Clearing and Reshaping Ditches: Ensuring water has a clear path away from the driveway.

  • Culvert Maintenance: Cleaning or installing culverts to prevent water from backing up and washing over the road.

  • French Drains: Installing sub-surface drainage in areas where water naturally pools.

4. What is the best time of year to repair my driveway in Vermont?

While we work throughout the warmer months, late spring is ideal. Once the "mud season" frost has left the ground and the driveway is about 80% dried out, we can effectively reset the crown that may have been disturbed by winter plowing.

5. How often should I schedule professional maintenance?

To prevent minor ruts from becoming expensive washouts, we recommend a thorough professional grading every 1–2 years, depending on your traffic volume. Regular maintenance in the spring and fall helps clear debris from drainage channels and keeps your surface compacted.

6. Will your equipment damage my lawn or existing landscaping?

We pride ourselves on professional results with great attention to detail. We use appropriately sized equipment for residential properties to minimize impact and ensure any displaced gravel is raked back into the driveway body, leaving your property looking clean and functional.
